The foothills and mountains of North Carolina are rich with Revolutionary War history. The Overmountain Victory Trail Association, along with local parks and communities throughout the region, have teamed up with the National Park Service to create a trail system that commemorates the history of this area.
The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail follows the route of the Revolutionary War patriot militia that trekked through the mountains of Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These patriots ended their journey at Kings Mountain South Carolina, where they defeated the British army. Portions of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail can be hiked through Lake James State Park and the 1780 community on Lake James.
